Shanty B (Born Belinda Mercado Reid) Singjay, Songwriter, actress and film editor has been a rising star in Jamaica's popular culture for the past five years after deciding to take her favorite childhood past time to another level. She possesses a voice that often been described as sultry, sexy, different and unique, one that makes you want to stop and listen. It has taken her a while but she has finally arrived where she wants to be with her sights purposefully set on the pinnacle of the recording business.
Shanty B, queen of Jamaica's second city Montego Bay, grew up up in the cool hills of Rock Hall, St. Andrew a community best know for some of Jamaica's most successful recording artist like Pinchers, Spanner Bonner, Pliers and Richie Spice. So far she has released 8 singles a few of which have been receiving rotation on the radio and in the clubs, "I have even received a royalty check from JACAP," she laughs.
She has also teamed up with international artiste, Anthony B on a collaboration, entitled Tickle Me, on the free willy label. With a modest hit, Oh Boy, under her belt, she is gearing up to surpass that recent success with Go Wuk Fi Dat, which is also on the Sinai Label. Her recent single entitled "Climb Up On Him" on the beachy riddim produced by Fatteyes Production is getting heavy rotation in the clubs, radio, all over Cayman and the Caribbean and is the most requested on Blow Radio in Texas.
Shanty B has performed at the top club Assylum, Ninjaman's birthday bash in Clearendon, where she was extremely loved by the patrons. Her performance at the annual Lady Saw's Strip Tease in Negril was unforgettable. The crowd loved her and she gave them a performance of a life time. Shanty B has also performed in schools and at community events.
The last five years have been ups and downs but finally she has begun to knock on the right doors and some of them are opening. One such is the Baker and Taxi records operated by the legendary rhythm duo, Sly & Robbie and Rory Baker, one of the most experienced engineer/producers in the music business today. As an added bonus to her rising fortunes, she is now doing crazy work for the Fatteyes Label and Yard life Production in Tivoli Gardens. Shanty B is one young upcoming artist who sets her sight on being the first female to receive a Grammy in her genre.
