SPANISH Town in St Catherine has produced a number of big dancehall artistes. They include deejays Papa San, Stitchie, Kip Rich, Skull Man, and the late Dirtsman and Pan Head.

The Hopedale-based Quantanium Records aims to continue that trend of producing hit songs by acts from the old capital.

The label -- which is headed by 19-year-old Akiem 'Fresh Beatz' Bingham and 21-year-old Roshane 'FX' Rhule -- has created a buzz with its latest production, Gain the World by singjay Jahmiel.

According to Bingham, it has not been easy getting off the ground.

"We started out in 2011 and, so far, it has been challenging, but I have a passion for music and I am just happy to be doing what I love," he told Splash.

Bingham and Rhule double as Quantanium's producers and engineers.

Bingham, who attended Jose Marti High School, studied music at the Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts. Rhule also attended Jose Marti, but did electrical engineering at HEART Academy.

Bingham grew up in White Water Meadows, Spanish Town, while Rhule resides in Sydenham Gardens which is on the outskirts of the town.

Quantanium has been working with a number of up-and-coming acts from Spanish Town including singjay Emblem, deejays Vitch, L.E.A.D. and Navino. Kingston artistes Potential Kidd and Cubanist have also done songs for the label.

Bingham said since Gain The World took off, the fledgling label's stocks have risen.

"It has been difficult to get the big-name artistes to record for us, but with Jahmiel's song doing well right now, it kind of opened the doors for us. We are getting more recognition now, and more artistes have been linking with us to do some work," he said

Bingham, who aspired to become a chef, said the music bug bit him while in the ninth grade at Jose Marti.

"I graduated with five CXC subjects and everything changed for me. Music was what I wanted to do, so I decided to put the idea of being a chef on pause," he explained.

Upcoming projects for the label include mixtapes by Capleton (a production for Bassick Records) and Cubanist, as well as a single titled Nah Let Go by Emblem.
